Gael Linn 2014

Another course available to us in TY has been the Gael Linn Communications course. It took place over 5 days, and 3 of our blog members attended from December 1st-5th.

The first three days were focused around making our own radio shows. Along with students from another school, the 15 of us planned and produced our radio programmes 'as Gaeilge'. On Wednesday we visited 'Raidió Na Life' where we recorded our shows in the studio with the help of the station's producer. Our shows consisted of music, chat and interviews. It was a great experience and so exciting to be a radio presenter for the day!

The last two days were centered around making our short film. We brought in props, wrote the script and finally began filming on Friday. We were taught how to use professional cameras and learned lots of new useful skills that we will definitely use again! After recording our films we edited the clips on the iMovie software and decided on the final cut.

Overall it was a really enjoyable week and it didn't hurt that we were in Dublin city every day. It was definitely worthwhile and a fun way to improve our irish, learn new skills and meet new people! We would recommend everyone in fourth year to take part in the course and it's something for future TY's to look forward to.

Santa Flight 2014

Nine students from fourth year were chosen to take part in the Santa Flight 2014. On Tuesday the 9th of December we all set off to Dublin Airport to spend the day with children from Temple Street Hospital.

We got the bus up to the airport, on the bus we sang festive songs and used face-paints on each other. Once we reached the airport we were escorted to the check in counter.  We settled ourselves and began to sing Christmas songs as all the children and their parents checked in. Journalists from newspapers such as the Irish Independent took pictures and wrote about the fun day. Celebrities such as Brian Ormond also came along.

Once everyone had checked in, we sang our way through security, all the way to the boarding gate.  While on the plane we sang, took part in a Christmas quiz, laughed and had plenty of fun. Santa made an appearance on the plane asking all the children what they wanted for Christmas. We flew around Dublin to Bray and then back to the airport.

After the flight we went and got a bus to the CityJet Headquarters in Swords where a party was being held for ourselves and the children. During the party we got to know the children more, we used face-paints again and we sang more Christmas songs. It was wonderful to see the children join in and have plenty of fun. The smiles of all of the children and their parents was refreshing.

Once the party ended we set off back to school.  The entire day was filled with fun.
It was such a wonderful experience and a pleasure to be a part of.

The Girls that took part were as follows: Rebecca Hughes Moore, Orla Moule, Ruth Moore, Kate Brillantes, Dana Abar, Lauren O Keeffe, Aurica Syrbu, Amy Richardson and Sandra Mekougang and Ms. Hunt.

Shakespeare Festival 14 November

Each TY English class participated in the 4th year Shakespearean Festival on Friday 14th. Each class incorporated the traditional Shakespearean concepts in their play with modern twists. Some of the plays recreated 'Othello', 'King Lear', 'Midsummer's Night Dream' and 'Much Ado About Nothing'.

One class put a modern take on 'Othello' with 'Gossip Girl'. Also in the mix were the Kardashian sisters and 'Jeremy Kyle'! The production of 'The Jeremy Kyle Show' in 'Othello' was the well-deserving winner.

Each play had impressive hair, make-up and costumes, scripts, props, you name it!

Each class received an award for different aspects of their play that made them stand out.

Overall it was a really enjoyable and successful morning that would not have came about if it wasn't for the hard work and dedication of the students and their teachers.

Health and Beauty Workshop 7 November

On Friday the 7th of November, as part of the Health and Beauty module, we were
given a talk about healthy eating and having a healthy lifestyle, by Rachel O'Loughlin from UniSlim. The aim was to give us confidence to make smart choices about the food we eat and how making these good choices will benefit our skin, hair and our overall lifestyle.

We were shown how to put together some healthy, balanced meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For example, we were taught how to cook a quick spaghetti bolognaise, a 'curry in a hurry', and a loaf of homemade brown bread. Rachel showed us just how easy it is to make healthy cooking choices! All of these recipe videos are on the Unislim facebook page.

Rachel also allowed us to taste some 'super foods' that are great for achieving clear skin. Some of these were avacado, carrots, mango, broccoli and blueberries. We also learned how to make a homemade hand scrub and face mask using household ingredients such as oats, strawberries, honey and oil. Overall it was an enlightening afternoon and I think it really motivated some of us to begin leading a healthier lifestyle!
